Content
One of the core conditions managed in general adult psychiatry. Two cases are presented with the emphasis on understanding the symptoms and progress of the illness.
In the textbook, the mental state examination seems straightforward, but in the real world of busy clinical medicine most people find it confusing.
Case One: Patient describes her psychotic experiences, typical of those seen in this condition. At the case presentation one of the doctors describes the mental state examination and this is a good example of the standard expected in an examination setting.
Case Two: Here the patient is seen in three interviews spread over a period of time and it is instructive to see the changing mental state. The florid thought disorder seen in interview one is much improved. Discussion is wide ranging and discusses the importance of doctor patient relationships.
Additional features include interviews with community nurses in the UK and abroad.
